1. The timing of the migration varies somewhat from year to year. Based on previous years the migration occurs somewhere between Labor Day and Sept. 20th. Follow our daily update on www.twitter.com/themonarchtrail or check out the website at www.themonarchtrail.org .
2. There is no “best time” to view the migration as it is a fluid event with Monarchs arriving and departing at various times. During the day Monarchs nectar on goldenrod, asters and boneset in the Monarch Glen, below the north and south berm and along the garden loop. At night they will roost in the surrounding trees including the Oak Opening and the Sycamore.
3. Monarchs are opportunists and will arrive and leave when the wind and weather is optimum. Check the website or twitter for sighting updates but the best way to view Monarchs is to make several trips to the trail.
4. The trail starts at the Milw. County Parks Dept. parking lot at 9480 W Watertown Plank Rd directly across from the Mental Health Complex. It runs west from there and follows Swan Blvd. North. For map and directions click HERE.
5. The trail is free and open to the public. The trail is at present supported only by kind volunteers, donations and button sales. Buttons are available at the trail head and the Parks Building lobby. Donations can be made to the Friends of the Monarch Trail c/o The Park People.
6. Dog are welcome on the County Grounds. If you bring your dog on the trail please leash it during the Migration as many children will be on the trail. And of course please pick-up droppings.
